Description
Biota Green Plate Coral (Fungiasp.)
While the green plate coral is generally hardy in captivity, tank propagated specimens such as these offer the best chances of success for the beginning reef aquarist. Its flashy green color is sure to impress, particularly under actinic lighting.Considerable care should be taken when handling this physically delicate animal. It prefers moderate lighting and moderate water flow.It is capable of stinging and thereby damaging neighboring corals, so it should be afforded plenty of space. This solitary-polyp LPS can "puff" itself up to double its size. Thus, it should not be placed on the hardscape as it can fall off while inflated.Rather, it does best (and looks best) when it is resting over the sand bed.
Plate corals can be cut in half to produce two new individual corals.Progeny may also be produced if the coral is severely damaged, whereby tiny new polyps emerge from the skeleton (called "polyp bailout") and settle on the surrounding sand bed.See below for more information.
