Description
Majestic Angelfish (Pomacanthus navarchus)
Few would argue that this species earns its common name.Dark blue with white lines as a juvenile (like so many pomacanthid angels), its body markings transform into a virtual piece of abstract art with age and maturity. The majestic angelfish (alternately referred to as the navarchus or blue-girdled angel) develops a yellow-orange base color, a dark lime green color over its chin, a light blue mouth, a shadowy dark blue mask, black pelvic and anal fins, a black half-bar just before the tail and a series of perfectly arranged dark dots across the body.A light blue edging runs along the margins of the fins, mask and half-bar.The majestic angel is the smallest of the pomacanthids, which are the largest angelfishes. As it relies heavily on cryptic, sessile invertebrates (sponges, ascidians, etc.) for food in the wild, its record of survivability in captivity has been a bit shakier than more common pomacanthids such as the emperor angel. However, these aquacultured specimens are better adapted to a captive diet and thus present much better odds of survival in the typical home aquarium.

Benefits of Aquacultured Majestic Angelfish
Aquaculturedlivestock present a good alternative to wild-caught specimens. For example, whenbred and raised under captiveconditions, they more easily adjust to aquarium life. They also are less likely to carry disease.Aquacultured specimens can better tolerate shipping stress. Most importantly, by purchasing aquacultured fish you support the aquaculture of marine organisms and help to make our hobby more sustainable!
